Extend Your Install: Wig Glue and Tape

Updated: Jul 24, 2020

Wig Glue

Using a certified wig glue is a popular way to wear your wig for days/weeks at a time. Before applying glue it is important to note that improper use or installation of wig glue can result in the loss of hair or edges.

To begin, try on your wig and note where the hairline will fall. Fold the lace of your wig back off of your face and apply a thin line of glue on your skin directly in front of your hairline.

Take the tail of a fine-tooth comb and spread the line of glue into a thin flat layer, taking care not to spread glue onto your natural hairline. Allow the glue to dry so until it becomes clear.

Apply 1-2 more layers of glue in the same way, allowing each layer to completely dry before applying the next. Fold the lace of your wig forward, align the hairline with the glue, and use the tail of your comb to press the hairline into the glue. This is most easily done by holding the lace down in sections and using a blow dryer on a cool setting to dry the hairline.

To set the wig, use a wrap strip to tie your edges down. This allows the lace to “melt” into your skin giving you a natural hairline.

To remove wig applied with glue, use wig glue remover or rubbing alcohol. To see a step-by-step tutorial on this method, watch the video below.

Tape

Another great way to wear your wig for days or weeks at a time is to use wig tape. Wig tape can come in strips or rolls and is applied directly to skin or areas without hair. Before applying tape it is important to note that improper use or installation of wig tape can result in the loss of hair or edges.

To begin, try on your wig and note where the hairline will fall. Wipe desired areas of skin with an alcohol swab to remove any oils. Cut your wig tape into short strips and place them directly beside your hairline. Remove the paper covering the top of the tape to expose the other adhesive side.

Fold the lace of your wig forward, align the hairline with the tape, and use the tail of your comb to press the hairline into the tape.

To set the wig, use a satin wrap strip to tie your edges down. This allows the lace to “melt” into your skin giving you a natural hairline.

To remove wig applied with tape, use a formulated adhesive remover, rubbing alcohol, or water.
