Straighten Your Wig Like a Professional Stylist

When you want to bring an old wig back to life or try a new silky straight style, finding the right tools can be daunting.

We searched for products to get your wig silky and light-weight without compromising its health, and these are the results. Although you don't have to use these specific products, use the steps below as your guide to straightening your wig:

1. Use a Heat Protectant

2. Choose the Right Hair Straightener

3. Finish with a Weightless Oil

Use a Heat Protectant

Heat protectants are available in spray, serum, or cream formulas, and they provide a necessary barrier between your hair and your straightener. They reduce the damage that heat does to hair by using ingredients such as keratin (strengthen hair), humectants (add moisture to hair), and silicones (smooth the hair's cuticles).

Use your heat protectants on clean, damp hair, if you plan to blow dry.

We recommend letting your hair air-dry to reduce the total amount of heat being used. If you also air dry, use your heat protectants right before you use your straightener.

We always use both a spray and a serum. The serum coats and smooths the hair while the spray provides extra heat protection. But remember, the key to silky and light-weight hair is not using too much product. If your hair seems weighed down after straightening, you likely used too much serum or oil.

Choose the Right Hair Straightener

When choosing a hair straightener, those made with ceramic, tourmaline, and titanium plates are the most popular. These straighteners evenly distribute and regulate heat which helps protect your hair from heat damage. They also incorporate ion technology which makes frizzy hair smooth, shiny, and silky.

Pro-Tip: Use the "Chase Method" with your hair straightener.

Use a fine-toothed comb or bristle brush to smooth and separate your hair as you straighten. Place your comb in front of your straightener so that it "chases" the straightener as you travel down each section of hair.

Finish with a Weightless Oil

Oil adds moisture and shine to your hair and should be used after your straightener. This is because some natural oils can fry the hair at high temperatures. Our favorite weightless oil, the OGX Weightless Coconut Oil, is an exception because it contains both silicones to protect your hair from heat, and coconut oil to nourish your hair. Our favorite pure oil to apply after heat is Argan oil. It contains antioxidants, vitamins and fatty acids that make dull hair shine.
